Sherry (Short) Holwerda currently serves as the Title 1 Reading teacher at Rehoboth Christian Elementary school. She and her husband, Jim, who is Rehoboth’s Elementary/Middle school principal, have raised 4 children and reside in Gallup, NM. Beginning her work at Rehoboth in the fall of 1998, Sherry and her husband were glad at the opportunity for a cross cultural experience for their children, and for a different environment and expression of the Body of Christ. Before coming to the school, Sherry worked as a Kindergarten teacher in Grand Rapids, MI and also taught in Stavanger, Norway for two years. In her role at Rehoboth Sherry has found enjoyment in working with small groups of children in reading to show them how much they know and to guide them in learning more. She is passionate about explicit, systematic phonics instruction and has loved working with a dedicated and creative group of colleagues. Sherry and her family have been blessed by the community of believers at Rehoboth who pull together to serve, comfort and rejoice with one another on their journey together. In addition to her role as Title 1 Reading teacher, Sherry coordinates volunteer tutors that help with elementary students and mentors new teachers. Sherry attended Calvin College where she acquired her Masters in Reading. Aside from her love for children, Sherry is passionate about her connection to friends and family, nearby and long distance. She also enjoys traveling and hiking. Outside of work, Sherry coordinates Children’s Worship at her church and teaches a graduate class at Western New Mexico University. Sherry and her family also support Campus Crusade for Christ and Youth With A Mission, as they reach out to unsaved people with Christ’s love and forgiveness.
